The Historic Bacon House      circa 1886
Woods Hole

Nothing like a sweltering day, sunlight dancing on the shores of Nobska Point, and two gentlemen, tossing a coin that decided on the purchase of this unique Point. Horse and buggy by the side of the winding dirt road, a quick plunge into the inviting surf, and G. S. Sargent and William B. Bacon bought the property on the spot. Bacon won the Point. About 1883 a house was built called "The Match Box" A rare example of gracious living, untouched through all the years, and now most worthy of restoration.
This unblemished house has been in the Bacon family for over five generations. Robert Bacon had been a classmate of Theodore Roosevelt at Harvard and later became a member of his cabinet as Secretary of State in 1909.

President Taft honored him by appointing him Ambassador to France.

A son of Robert's, Gaspar, was lieutenant governor of Massachusetts and also ran for governor of the state but lost to James Curley.

After many years and generations the family have now decided to part with this treasure.

Church Street is a frozen era in time, rambling stone walls, charming gardens, and hidden
estates have kept this area unspoiled.

Enjoy unobstructed views that stretch across the waters in three directions plus the colorful natural vegetation that leads to the shore.

As one enters the front hall the view captivates and then one starts to observe the handmade winding stairway, the subtle alcove, plus the intricate spindles, moldings et cetera - all untouched.

Off to the right is a suite: living room with fireplace, large corner bedroom and private bath.

Towards the front of the house is another large living room with fireplace and directly across the hall is a dining room with fireplace.  An enclosed porch invites one to sit and enjoy the sun, the sparkling waters and the colorful natural vegetation

Service area and country kitchen.

Second Floor:  Three large bedrooms, two baths, and additional maid's rooms.  The space is ideal for changes to meet today's needs.

To one side of the property is an early tired Carriage House.

We invite you to come and see this memorable property and have fun as you imagine making it your very own.
